Sun, Wind, and Sand: How the High Desert Wears Down Your Paint (and What to Do About It)

The High Desert is beautiful, but it is tough on cars. Strong sun, dry air, blowing sand, and big swings between hot afternoons and cold nights all work on your paint every day. Here is what is happening to your finish, how to protect it, and when it is time for a repair.

What desert conditions do to paint

  • UV exposure. Sunlight breaks down clear coat over time. It starts as dullness, then turns cloudy, and eventually the clear coat peels, most often on roofs, hoods, and trunks.
  • Sand and wind. Windblown sand acts like fine sandpaper, pitting paint, headlights, and glass. Strong wind days can do real damage in a single drive.
  • Rock chips. Gravel roads and truck traffic on I-15, Highway 395, and Highway 18 throw rocks that chip paint down to the metal.
  • Heat cycles. Expanding and contracting with temperature changes stresses older or already-damaged paint.

Simple ways to protect your paint

  1. Park in shade or a garage whenever you can, or use a quality car cover.
  2. Wash regularly, and gently. Rinse off dust first so you are not grinding sand into the paint.
  3. Wax or seal it. A wax, sealant, or ceramic coating adds a protective layer against UV and grit.
  4. Fix chips early. A chip that reaches bare metal can rust and spread. Touching it up or repairing it early is far cheaper than repainting a panel.
  5. Keep your distance from trucks on the highway to cut down on rock chips.

When a repair makes sense

  • Peeling or flaking clear coat. Once clear coat fails, it will not polish out. The panel needs to be refinished.
  • Chips through to metal, especially on the hood and front bumper.
  • Scratches you can catch with a fingernail. These usually go through the clear coat.
  • Before selling or trading in. A clean finish helps value.

How we match your paint

Our paint and refinish team uses computerized color matching and blends new paint into neighboring panels so the repair disappears, even on faded or tricky colors. Paint is applied in our paint booth for a clean, durable finish. After a collision, paint work is part of every collision repair we do, backed by our lifetime warranty.

Common questions

Can faded paint be polished back?

If only the top of the clear coat is oxidized, polishing may help. If the clear coat is peeling or cloudy throughout, the panel needs refinishing.

Does insurance cover sun damage?

Generally no. Sun fading is considered wear. Damage from a specific event, like a hailstorm (usually comprehensive coverage) or a collision, is a different story.
