Diminished Value After an Accident: Can California Drivers Get Paid for Lost Value?
A car with an accident history can be worth less, even after a perfect repair. Here is what diminished value is and when California drivers may be able to claim it.

Even after a flawless repair, a car with an accident on its history report can sell or trade in for less than an identical car that was never damaged. That loss is called diminished value. Here is what California drivers should know about it.
This article is general information, not legal advice. For your specific situation, talk with your insurer or a qualified professional.
What diminished value means
Diminished value is the difference between what your car was worth right before the accident and what it is worth after it has been repaired. It mostly matters for newer vehicles, higher-value vehicles, and cars you plan to sell or trade in soon.
When you may be able to claim it in California
- If the other driver was at fault, you can generally seek diminished value as part of a third-party claim against their insurance. It is part of the property damage they caused.
- If you are claiming under your own policy, diminished value is usually not covered. Most collision coverage pays to repair the car, not for lost market value. Check your policy wording.
Insurers do not always offer diminished value on their own; you may need to ask for it and support the request.
How to support a diminished value claim
- Keep everything: the police report, photos, the repair estimate, supplements, and the final invoice.
- Get a detailed repair record. A clear, itemized record of what was repaired and replaced shows the extent of the damage, and that the work was done properly.
- Get an independent appraisal. A diminished value appraisal compares your car's value before and after the accident. Insurers take documented numbers more seriously than estimates.
- Act promptly. Claims are easier while the details are fresh, and legal deadlines apply.
Why the quality of the repair matters
A poor repair, with mismatched paint, uneven gaps, or structural work done incorrectly, makes value loss worse and can show up in a pre-purchase inspection. A repair done to the manufacturer's procedures with the right parts protects the car's value as much as possible. We follow factory procedures on every repair, hold Ford, Honda ProFirst, and Acura certifications, and back our work with a lifetime warranty. Common questions
Will my car show up on a vehicle history report?
Often, yes, especially if a police report was filed or an insurance claim was paid. That is one reason a documented, high-quality repair matters.
Can you help with my claim?
We can provide detailed repair documentation (photos, estimates, and invoices) that supports your claim. The claim itself is between you and the at-fault driver's insurer.
Is diminished value worth pursuing on an older car?
Usually the loss is smaller on older, high-mileage vehicles. It is most worthwhile for newer or higher-value cars.
